  1. {Hold up three ropes} Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen! Today I have three ropes. In a moment, I will make them appear to be the same length. For the time being, however, we have three different lengths, representing three kinds of people right here today.

  2. {Hold up short rope} First, I have this short rope. This rope represents very good people with a short list of wrong things they’ve done. They go out of their way to help others and are never a problem to anyone.

  3. {Hold up medium rope} The second rope represents those who are not all bad, but they’re not all good, either. They try to do what’s right, but occasionally miss the mark when they mistreat others, lose their temper, lie, and the like.

  4. {Hold up long rope} This last rope represents those who go out of their way to make others miserable. These people delight to destroy all those around them.

  5. God alone is holy by His very nature. He is the sum total of all that is good, fitting, and right, times infinity (Isa. 6:3). Even though we see people differently and categorize one another, God sees us all the same. {Hold up all ropes as same length} We’re the same in three important ways:

  6. {Pull out first rope} The first thing we have in common is that we’re all imperfect. All of us are tainted by a thing called “sin”. Sin is anything that we do, say, or think that dishonors God according to His Word, the Bible (Rom. 3:23; Isa. 17:9). All of us are sinners by nature, and undeserving of any merit in the sight of God.

  7. {Pull out second rope} The second thing we have in common is that we deserve to be punished for our sin by spending eternity separated from God in a real place called the Lake of Fire (Ez. 18:4; Heb. 9:17).

  8. {Pull out third rope} The third rope represents the Good News that even though we deserve to die for our sin, God provided a way for us to know Him better forever in Heaven. This salvation was made possible by Jesus, who shed His blood on the cross. Then, being God in human form, He proved His deity by rising again (Heb. 9:22; Jn. 14:2 & 3). Yes, undeserving though we are, God paid for our sin by His own blood on the cross, so that we may freely accept His gift of eternal life, enjoying eternity with our Savior.

  9. {Tuck ropes out of sight} To accept Jesus Christ as Savior, we need simply to agree with the Word of God concerning our need of Him. We must trust that He died in our place for our sin and physically rose from the dead, even as we confess our unrighteousness to Him. (Rom. 10:9, 10, 13). If you are willing now to trust Jesus’ finished work for the pardon of your sin and its penalty, please let me know by taking one of these pamphlets from my hand. {Extend hand with literature} My friends and I would be glad to talk to you about this most important step of your life.
